Understanding Pitra Tarpan — A Simple Guide

Pitra Tarpan is a ritual water offering — combining water with sesame (til), flowers, or barley — made to ancestors as an act of gratitude and remembrance. It is among the most accessible forms of Pitra Seva.

At Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj, Tarpan is performed on the banks of the confluence, with the priest guiding the sankalp, the ancestral names, and the offering sequence.

Tarpan is traditionally performed on Amavasya (new moon), during Pitru Paksha, and on significant death anniversaries. However, families may also arrange it at other appropriate times with priest guidance.

The ritual does not require elaborate preparation. Bring the names of those being remembered, dress modestly, and arrive at the designated ghat with your coordinator's guidance.
